Hell

As delineated in its very title, this one was directed by Norwood Cheek and Grady Cooper. Almost all of the vignettes were my idea, as was the demonic Lawrence Welk set.

We shot it hurriedly in the Cat's Cradle in January 1997, immediately after completing Perennial Favorites. Stu Cole was terribly ill, but we were rushed to head back out on the road to perform at President Clinton's second inaugural ball. In the meantime, "Hell" was skyrocketing up the charts.

As usual, everyone gets their own vignette. I love that Ken Mosher and his actress girlfriend spend their romantic evening picking up shards of glass. Jé Widenhouse refused to mime to a recorded solo he didn't play, so out came the fishing line once again. I put a black circle around my eye like Pete the Dog in the Little Rascals shorts from the 1930s. It seemed both appropriate and occult.

During editing in Los Angeles, I pushed hard to add subliminal messages and have myself engulfed in flames at the end. Norwood and Grady shot both ideas down. I'd still do 'em!
